Text of the article by Alexey Akindinov:

"Completed work on the painting "Dali's Violin". The canvas is part of a large-scale triptych dedicated to the famous Spanish painter and surrealist of the 20th century, Salvador Dali. I started working on the triptych back in 2019. Then I had the idea to paint a portrait of Dali, reflecting the world of his surrealism through the prism of the style of ornamentalism I created. I worked on the pencil sketch for a long time. He took his time and thought through every detail. As a result, in 2020, my painting “Dali’s Throne” was born. The main character sits on a throne surrounded by the attributes of the world of surrealism. I have an idea to introduce into the plot of the painting objects that Dali never depicted in his work, but they would fit very harmoniously into the world of surrealism. So, in the painting “Dali’s Throne” I painted a steam locomotive".

"I learned about the work of Salvador Dali when I was eleven years old. I was introduced to him by my painting teacher at Children’s Art School No. 1 in Ryazan, Valery E. Cheremin. The teacher brought the magazine “Young Artist” to class; it contained an article dedicated to the great Spanish master of the brush. During this time, I studied Dali's work well. The task I set myself was to display the world of El Salvador in the picture through the “prism” of my patterns. Add to the composition objects that should be in his surreal universe, but he never depicted them. Therefore, without difficulty, the image of a steam locomotive appeared in my head. The painting "Dali's Throne" is made in a combination of Dali's world and my style of ornamentalism. I depicted large floating snowflakes, in some places they cast shadows, and sometimes they seem to hover in front of the surface of the canvas (between the viewer and the work). The snowflake in painting is my “signature” sign. I discovered and was the first to apply this method in 1997 in the canvas “Gerika-Gerlikaerika”. The idea is to depict large snowflakes in the plot, which seem to be layered onto reality. The painting also contains very small patterns that cover the sky and Salvador Dali’s jacket. All details were painted by hand with a thin brush, without the use of stencils, stamps, seals, airbrushes or other devices that speed up and simplify the painting process."

"When the work "Dali's Throne" was written, I presented it to the audience at the Regional Art Exhibition "Autumn 2020" in my hometown. The vernissage was dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the Ryazan organization of the Union of Artists of Russia and was held in the Exhibition Hall of the Ryazan Regional State Art Museum named after Ivan P. Pozhalostin".

"The exhibition collected about a hundred works by contemporary masters of the brush. In a virtual video tour, the Chairman of the Ryazan branch of the Union of Artists of Russia, Viktor L. Grusho-Novitsky, paid attention to my painting and said a few good words about the painting and my work. In particular, that for several decades now I have been adhering to my line in creativity, reflecting the world through patterns and faithfully leading this style of art “without turning anywhere” from the chosen path".

"he painting "Dali's Throne" received great success among art connoisseurs and ordinary viewers. After its publication on the Internet, I read a lot of positive responses. I received an offer to take part in a collective art exhibition dedicated to portraiture in the largest museum in St. Petersburg with this canvas. Art critics paid attention to “Dali’s Throne” and in their articles praised the canvas, especially the interesting ornamental effect that I discovered, when the painted snowflakes seemed to hover in the space between the viewer and the painting, as if casting shadows and highlights on the subject".

"All this turned out to be an inspiring stimulus for me. I decided to develop the theme by writing a triptych dedicated to the world of Dali, where the painting “Dali’s Throne” would become its central part. Having started the mental work of searching for the necessary plots, I went through a lot of options, but none of them satisfied me sufficiently. After two years of creative search, I found the necessary, original topics and solutions.

It all started with a shell.

I was given several beautiful sea shells, from the simplest to the most bizarre and fantastic. I admired their intricate shapes, the play of light, the patterns on the surface, and listened to the “music of the sea.” It was as if it dawned on me - I literally saw in my imagination the plot of the next picture! On the left, one of the sea shells is levitating in the sky".

He has a head with eyes and a mouth. It is formed by the top of the violin: the “neck” of the fingerboard; a tuning box with pegs, which at the same time are the character’s ears.

Immediately the next object appears, which Salvador Dali never depicted in his works, but it literally asks to be brought into Dali’s world: this is an iron.

"The hand of the hero of the picture rests on his arm. With it he smooths out the folds on the ground and, like napkins, square snowflakes. I introduce a bow into the plot, one end of which stands on the ground, the other, rushes upward, goes into the heavens, above the edge of the picture. I would say beyond the skies. In fact, the hero of the picture is an apparatus for creating and extracting an ornamental symphony, consisting of a violin, sea shells and a person".

"Simultaneously with the plot of “Dali’s Violin” (that’s what I called the canvas), a third picture immediately appears in my imagination. This often happens in creativity - after a long search, uncertainty, images seem to “shoot out” one after another, revealing themselves to the world. I dreamed of a beautiful naked girl who stands on a large pearl and personifies the goddess of love - Venus. The pedestal for beauty is a shell, the shape of which was taken from the collection of “sea wonders” that was recently given to me. Peering with my inner gaze, I clearly saw another object that Dali could have depicted in his paintings, but for some reason he never depicted. It turned out to be a sewing machine".

"Like her mirror image, I saw a small elephant calf next to her. His trunk repeated the shape and movements of the sewing machine handle. All this appeared so clearly in the imagination that it was like the manifestation of a photograph of the surreal and ornamental worlds. On the back of the baby elephant I saw a telephone receiver. It was an elephant telephone that could be used to call Venus. From this the name of the painting “Telephone of Venus” was immediately born.

Before I start working on the canvas, I always carefully sketch on paper and pencil. I'm redoing a lot of things, looking for the perfect composition. So this time I drew detailed sketches for the paintings, one after another: “Dali’s Violin” and “Telephone of Venus”.

"On October 15, 2023, he completed work on the canvas “Dali’s Violin”. The actual painting process in oil on canvas lasted about a year. In addition to the storyline depicting a surreal character with the body of a violin and the chest of a sea shell, I depicted this world through the prism of my ornamental perception. The entire sky of the plot is made up of large snowflakes, which in turn are formed by the smallest patterns. The entire sky is covered with fancy arabesques using the effect of additional colors. Some patterns have bluish and greenish shades adjacent to delicate pinks and purples. From a distance, everything merges into a general play of light and it seems that the sky in the picture is flickering. The work consists of approximately one hundred thousand patterns. In the coloring of the painting, I tried to adhere to the principles of the “old masters” of the Renaissance. The dominant colors are: ocher; brown; pearl and terracotta shades. I depicted a mountain near the horizon (on one side of the character), and a fortress with a lighthouse tower on the other. The main character of the painting and all the objects also shine through other snowflakes, as if located between the viewer and the character of the canvas. Snowflakes have different shapes, from classic hexagonal to seventeen-sided, and also my favorite square and diamond-shaped ones. This creates the effect of a mirror, figurative echo, when snowflakes in the sky enter into dialogue with snowflakes that seem to be next to us. It is worth noting that I noticed this special “visual echo” effect in my paintings many years ago. This compositional technique was born by chance and is part of my concept of ornamentalism. The patterns on the ground have a thread structure. The main character of the picture smoothes out these soil wrinkles with an iron. Another unexpected and interesting effect turned out - the iron I introduced into the plot, like an object that Dali never depicted, strokes the snowflakes like napkins. And they fit into the plane of the multidimensional space of the composition. A new dimension is being born. Surrealism ceases to be just surrealism. In combination with my ornamentalism, a new reality of being appears".

The third painting, “Telephone of Venus,” is currently in the process of being completed on canvas. I'm currently making two-tone grisaille.
